WHAT IS IT?
AIR Fibre is our next generation of breathable cushioning. Made with a 3D matrix of elastic, looped polymer filaments that supports the body on a structure of mostly open air. Cooler than foam, lighter and more responsive than gel. The result is a seating surface that breathes continuously, recovers instantly, is easy to clean. Improved microclimate with full ventilation and keep skin cooler and drier throughout use.

WHY IT MATTERS FOR WHEELCHAIR SEATING
Pressure injuries and heat-related skin breakdown are persistent challenges in long-term wheelchair use. Traditional foam compresses over time and traps heat and moisture against the skin. Gel inserts offer better pressure distribution but are heavy and often slow to respond. Air Fibre addresses both problems: it is cooler than foam, lighter than gel, and far more responsive to movement. The open filament structure allows continuous airflow across the seating surface, improving the microclimate beneath the user throughout the day.
KEY PROPERTIES
Continuous ventilation: Air moves freely through the open filament matrix during use, keeping skin cooler and drier than closed-cell materials can.
Instant recovery: Unlike foam, which can take time to rebound after compression, Air Fibre returns to its original form immediately when pressure is removed.
Easy to clean: The open structure allows surfaces to be wiped clean or rinsed, reducing the maintenance burden for clinicians and caregivers.
Lightweight: The material is significantly lighter than comparable gel components, reducing the added weight on the wheelchair system.
PRODUCTS
Air Fibre is being introduced into the Free Form and Respira product lines, replacing Stimulite as Symmetric Designs transitions to materials that offer the same, or better, performance benefits. Contact your distributor or reach out to Symmetric Designs for availability information.
